Firefly Online Reunites The Serenity Crew For MMO Adventures

By Brent McKnight | Updated

FireflyPractically since the very moment Fox cancelled it back in 2003, fans have been clamoring for a Firefly reunion. The cast and crew of the beloved, gone-too-soon series have gotten back together for various gatherings and conventions over the years, not to mention the feature-length movie Serenity in 2005. Still, that’s not enough for Browncoats the world over, it’s never enough for the truly fanatical, but don’t worry, there’s more to come as the cast from the series is going to lend their voices to an upcoming massive multiplayer online game.

The announcement came at San Diego Comic-Con that Nathan Fillion, Regina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and the rest will reprise their iconic roles for Firefly Online. There will also be some surprises along for the ride as well, like Michael Fairman playing Niska, the crime boss who appears in a couple of episodes.

Alan Tudyk will also be part of the cast, which would seem to put to bed the long-standing debate among fans as to whether or not his character, Wash, is truly dead or not. (He was recently resurrected, sort of.) That is, unless this winds up being some sort of prequel to the main story, which is one way to bring a character back from the dead. Over the years, Tudyk has voiced numerous animated characters, and will also reportedly provide the voices of other characters within the game.

There is also this gameplay trailer that should give you a good idea of what to expect from an actual turn around the ‘Verse:

The video asks fans what they would do if they were a captain, and their responses show you some of what you’ll be able to do, which includes designing your own avatar and decorating your very own ship, both inside and out. That’ll surely lead to some interesting looking spacecraft. You also get a peek at the action, both on land and flying around beyond the atmosphere. All in all, it looks like pretty fun time, especially with Fillion himself at the controls. You can play however you choose, as part of a group, working in collaboration with others, or as your very own fiercely independent force to be reckoned with.

Firefly Online is the result of a collaboration between Sparkplug, Quantum Mechanix, and Fox Digital Entertainment, and will be available on all the usual gaming platforms, including your iPhone and Android devices. Back in December, Quantum Mechanix’s Andy Gore said, “For us, the most exciting thing is player-created ‘jobs’ (the Firefly Online name for quests)…There will be a job-creation system where players will be able to craft adventures for other players to partake in. We’re looking forward to seeing what people do with that system.”

For fans of the show, Firefly Online will provide the opportunity to experience the continuing adventures of their favorite band of space outlaws, as well as immerse themselves in the action, becoming part of the team. And isn’t that the dream?

There’s no word on the release date, but you can go to KeepFlying.com to register for new and updates about the game as they are released. Just a warning, the servers are swamped right now, so it may take a while to get actually get through.
