Is Firefly: The Animated Series In The Works?

“You can’t take the sky from me.” This weekend at New York Comic-Con, the cast of Firefly reunited, once again, in front of a panel of rabid Browncoats. During the panel, actor Nathan Fillion teased the possibility of Firefly: The Animated Series. After hearing the news, the crowd in the Javits Center’s IGN Theater went crazy!
The cast of Firefly gathered to promote their new 10th anniversary TV special — Browncoats Unite — on the Science Channel, which airs on November 11th. Fillion then teased, “If we’re dreaming, tell me what you think about this: Firefly the animated series.” After the panel, Fillion’s Firefly co-star, Sean Maher (Simon Tam), said, “I know somebody who is actually trying to get that done, who has approached Joss [Whedon, the creator] about it. He used to work with Guillermo del Toro.”
During the panel, Fillion added to talk up the idea of an animated series, “I think there’s less face to be lost in an animated series.” He continued, “I think if there was going to be a second movie, it would have happened by now. That was eight years ago.”
As we all know, Firefly was one of the best sci-fi TV series of the 2000s. It only aired 11 of its 14 episodes before being pre-maturely canceled by Fox, but it still managed to build a diehard fan base, who have taken to calling themselves “Browncoats.” Although the series aired for only four months in 2002, there was enough enthusiasm for the series that it made its way onto the big screen as the movie Serenity in 2005. Fans of the series hoped there would be more from the Firefly ‘verse, such as a sequel to Serenity, but so far only comic books and action figures have been available to help quench the fans’ thirst for more. With the success of Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, the idea of an animated series actually seems…plausible.
