Final Pacific Rim Trailer Reminds You There Are People In This Movie

Isn’t this always how it goes? First they lure you win with copious amounts of promotion highlighting giant mechanoids punching massive monsters in the face. You’re loving it, it makes you feel all tingly, and you’re super excited to see this epic action projected many stories high on an IMAX screen. Then, out of nowhere, they blindside you with things like character and story. At least that’s what Summit and Warner have done with Guillermo del Toro’s sci-fi adventure Pacific Rim. It was Jaegers versus Kaiju hot and heavy for almost a year, but over the last week or so, as the July 12 release date approaches, the marketing focus has changed, placing more of an emphasis on the people in the movie. Weird, huh? This latest, and supposedly final, trailer continues this trend.
If you read these words with a heavy heart, you have no reason to fret. There’s still plenty of mech on monster violence to satisfy your cravings, including some new footage. Just because this video is supposed to remind you that there are in fact people in Pacific Rim, and that they do have stories, characters, feelings, and the whole nine yards, doesn’t mean they’re going to ignore the epic scale action.
We know that, after the giant Kaiju emerge from a hole at the bottom of the ocean, humanity turns to the Jaeger program in order to combat this menace. The various Pacific Rim plot summaries we’ve seen also let us know that Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam), a seemingly washed up pilot, plays an important role in a last ditch effort to defeat the invaders. This trailer begins with Stacker Pentacost (Idris Elba) tracking down Raleigh in what looks like a futuristic squat.
While the action component of this trailer is as exciting as always, the most interesting part of this video is what it shows us about the world. So far we’ve seen high tech scientific facilities, and futuristic neo-noir settings that resemble Blade Runner, but now you get to see how the other half lives. When big ass monsters show up knocking at your door, they tend to create quite a mess, for example knocking over buildings. This is going to leave a great many people without anywhere to live, and from the look of things, some of the homeless have taken to camping out amidst the abandoned ruins. This is where Stacker finds Raleigh, and details like this are really going to help sell the world of Pacific Rim.
