With only seven months until its release, Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium is quickly becoming one of the standouts in a year full of interesting science fiction movies. The social allegory involving Matt Damon’s Max trying to find salvation on an orbiting space station while Sharlto Copley’s Kruger is pursuing him has captured the imagination of sci-fi genre fans. Now you can take a first look at Sharlto Copley’s villain character – Kruger – in the image below.

Elysium-Sharlto-Copley

Unlike J.J. Abrams, Neill Blomkamp isn’t afraid to divulge a character’s name in his upcoming sci-fi movie. Sharlto Copley looks vastly different from his Wikus character in Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 in 2009. Copley looks grimy, filthy, and fierce as Kruger. It appears he has some sort of bionic implants on the side of his face, which is unclear what they will be used for.

According to Copley, Kruger is charismatic, energetic, and will be entertaining to watch in the movie Elysium. He compared the entertainment value of Kruger to Heath Ledger’s Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. While Kruger doesn’t appear to be charismatic in the image above, we should probably wait until we hear the character talk and interact with his prey Max.

The movie Elysium takes place in the year 2159, the Earth is a wasteland and the world’s wealthy live on an orbiting space station called Elysium, leaving the rest of the world’s population to toil below. Max reluctantly takes a mission to infiltrate the space station to try to save his own life, while trying to bring equality between the wealthy and poor. But Secretary Rhodes is a hard-edged government official who tries to enforce anti-immigration laws in the space station Elysium to protect its affluent citizens.

A few months ago, Sony decided to push Elysium’s release date from March 2013 to summer 2013 to maximize its audience potential.

Elysium will hit theaters everywhere on August 9th 2013.
