Falling Skies Viral Ad Has Something In Your Eye

TNT’s Falling Skies has been maddeningly mediocre for much of its run, occasionally hinting at great promise but never really rising to the occasion in the way it should. Last year’s season finale introduced a potentially game-changing twist in the form of a mysterious new alien who could prove to be friend or foe for Tom Mason and his fellow beleaguered humanity. But with the show set to return for its third season in a little under two weeks, Falling Skies has decided to try a new tactic for luring in viewers: stomach-churning body horror.

The viral video above is actually pretty clever, looking for all the world like just another commercial for contact lenses before going horribly and unexpectedly wrong. It’s so well done that I’m hoping they’ll actually air this thing on TV, because it loses a lot of its surprise factor when it’s clearly associated with the show in the video’s file name. If TNT isn’t using this thing to scare the crap out of soccer moms during primetime, they’re not getting their money’s worth.

Falling Skies will return on June 9. All the usual suspects will be back, including Noah Wylie, Moon Bloodgood, Will Patton, Sarah Carter, and Colin Cunningham. Frequent Guillermo del Toro collaborator Doug Jones will also join the show, in the role of the mysterious new arrival teased in last season’s finale. Here’s hoping the show really hits its stride this time around.
