The closer we get to a production start date, the more we’ll hear about casting for Star Wars: Episode VII. The seventh installment in the Star Wars Saga is the most anticipated film of 2015, which is impressive considering the full slate of films coming out that year. Star Wars: Episode VII would be the first live-action Star Wars movie to be released in theaters since Revenge of the Sith in 2005. It seems like every actor who has ever appeared in a Star Wars movie wants to be cast in Star Wars: Episode VII. Now it appears like one of the stars from the prequel trilogy wants to return to “a galaxy far, far away.”

According to Latino Review’s inside sources, actor Ewan McGregor is in talks to appear in Star Wars: Episode VII for director J.J. Abrams. Kellvin Chavez from Latino Review continues to explain that Ewan McGregor would reprise his role as Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. Now I know what you’re thinking, “Didn’t Obi-Wan Kenobi die as an old man played by Sir Alec Guinness in A New Hope?” Alec Guinness came back to The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi as a Force ghost, and now it seems Ewan McGregor will also appear in Star Wars: Episode VII and the sequel trilogy as the same Midichlorian apparition.

Returning as a Force ghost is one of the most popular way for an actor to return to the Star Wars universe. Scottish actor Ian McDiarmid is also rumored to be returning to the new Star Wars film as the Sith version of a Force ghost with Emperor Palpatine. Now it seems like Samuel L. Jackson, Hayden Christensen, and Liam Neeson can all return to Star Wars: Episode VII as Jedi Force ghosts, if Disney wants them.

A few months ago, Ewan McGregor expressed an interest in returning to Star Wars, if there was a place for him in the universe. McGregor also said that he could see Obi-Wan Kenobi in his own stand-alone feature film that would take place between the 20 years of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. This time period for Kenobi was spent in the deserts of Tatooine learning the secrets to becoming a Force ghost from his old master Qui-Gon Jinn.

If Star Wars: Episode VII follows a new group of young Jedi Knights, then why would they seek advice from someone they would’ve never met like a Force ghost Obi-Wan Kenobi? It would be like Luke Skywalker seeking advice from Qui-Gon Jinn or Mace Windu. Maybe Obi-Wan Kenobi could appear to an older Luke Skywalker to give him advice on how to handle a new generation of Jedi Knights, but aside from McGregor’s appearance in Star Wars: Episode VII might make the most sense a cameo.

Right now we know very little about the story of Star Wars: Episode VII, so anything is possible. The only confirmed information about the new Star Wars movie is that J.J. Abrams will direct, Michael Arndt will write, John Williams will compose the score for the new film, and the original trilogy cast is likely to return. Aside from that, take this rumor with a grain of salt until Disney, Lucasfilm, or Ewan McGregor confirms it.

Star Wars: Episode VII will hit theaters everywhere sometime during the summer of 2015.
