Ender’s Game Movie Gets A 2013 Release Date
The in-production movie adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s masterful book Ender’s Game is headed towards theaters, for real this time. Summit Entertainment is so confident in the project that they’ve just set a release date for the film. Expect to see Ender’s Game in theaters on March 15, 2013.
That release date says a lot about their expectations for the film. Mid-March releases are usually reserved for movies that the studio thinks might do really well, but maybe not well enough to compete in the blockbuster packed summer months and probably not good enough with critics to release in the fall awards season.
As a fan of Ender’s Game I find that view somewhat disappointing. The material here is good enough that it really could be an awards worthy movie, and the sci-fi spectacle potential is definitely big enough that this could be a summer blockbuster. But Summit has already made it clear that they’re keeping the budget tight on this project and a March release date probably reflects that, as much as anything else. To compete in June you’ve got to spend, and spend big. Summit isn’t making a Transformers sized investment in Ender.
