After Earth Photo And Poster Lack Excitement

Here are two conversations about the same thing. “Hey, did you see the new picture for that Will Smith movie, After Earth, that’s coming out?” asks one guy. “The one with his son? Yeah, it looks okay, I guess,” says the other. Now let’s take a look at the other way. “Did you see the new picture for that M. Night Shyamalan…” asks the one guy before his friend throws boiling water in his face to make him shut up.

The After Earth Twitter page has unleashed a brand-new image from the film, in which Jaden Smith is — get this — running. Or perhaps he’s just in the middle of lunging, I’m not sure. See the full tweet below.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the settings and cinematography, which appears to embrace natural settings over ruined cityscapes, were the most interesting aspects of this film, kind of like The Fountain if Darren Aronofsky had been sniffing glue the entire time. I would absolutely love to anticipate this movie without an ounce of self-hatred, but that can never happen. Perhaps today’s trailer will change my mind.

Another image of Will Smith made a short trip around the web before Sony pulled it as a non-approved image. But to compensate, they released the following poster, courtesy of Coming Soon.

Beyond that fact that Will Smith looks more Photoshopped than an entire Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, it’s really an unremarkable poster that does nothing to convey anything about the film itself, other than that its main characters look serious about something. Even the “Danger is real. Fear is a choice.” tagline sounds like it came from a Tag Line Generator website.

After Earth will be released in theaters on June 7th.
