Under The Dome Returns For Season Two: This Week’s Sci-Fi TV

I wasn’t one of the folks who stuck with CBS’ Under the Dome last summer, as it shaved off my limited interest pretty quickly. Just for the sake of being informed, however, I sat back down and powered all the way through the first season a few weeks ago, so I can now honestly say: well, that was a mess. Just how much of a mess is doubly frustrating since that first season was under the guidance of Brian K. Vaughan, the otherwise brilliant comics writer behind Ex Machina, Y: The Last Man, and Saga. Frankly, I expected better from a show he was heading, and now this season he’s left to do other things. So the chances I’ll make it all the way through season 2 probably aren’t very good. Unless I get stuck under a mysterious dome and have nothing better to do. At any rate, Under the Dome returns tonight on CBS, so tune in and see what those pink stars are all about. (I’m presuming future seasons will address the question of green clovers, purple horseshoes, and and blue diamonds.)
We’ve also got the Fourth of July long weekend headed our way, and in the TV world that means one thing: marathons! Syfy has a long tradition of Twilight Zone holiday marathons, and this fourth will be no different. Beginning at 8 in the morning (7 Central), Syfy will be serving up some of the best of Rod Serling’s classic series, including “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet,” “Time Enough at Last,” “To Serve Man,” and more.
If black-and-white horror isn’t your thing, AMC is kicking off a weekend-long marathon of The Walking Dead, taking viewers all the way through the show’s four seasons before culminating in a Talking Dead season 5 preview special Sunday night. The Nerdist’s Chris Hardwick will be hosting guests Aisha Tyler and Walking Dead showrunner Scott M. Gimple, so tune in to see if they drop any intriguing hints about what’s to come on AMC’s zombie drama.

Barbie’s fate lies in Big Jim’s hands, and the Dome presents a new threat when it becomes magnetized. Meanwhile, Julia seeks out the help of a stranger to save the life of a mysterious girl who may hold clues to origin of the Dome.
TUESDAY
The Wil Wheaton Project (Syfy, 9/8c) — “Wil Wheaton and the Half Blood Project”
Wil offers his take on Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age of Extinction.
WEDNESDAY
Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman (Science, 10/9c) — “Is Gravity an Illusion?”
We feel it every moment of our lives but for physicists, gravity is the longest running unsolved mystery of the universe. Why do all objects that have mass pull on one another? Cutting-edge theories are proposing unexpected answers: Gravity could be another force in disguise, a thermodynamic mirage, or even a shadow of a hidden holographic universe. If so, the force that holds us to the surface of the earth and holds the earth in orbit around the sun may be a trick of the mind. We feel it, but it may not be real. Is Gravity an Illusion?

Halt and Catch Fire (AMC, 10/9c) — “Landfall”
The Last Ship (TNT, 9/8c) — “Dead Reckoning”
The James faces off against a new foe who demands Chandler hand over Rachel and her research. When Chandler refuses, he and his crew are put to the test as Chandler engages in a series of risky strategic moves. But it turns out their new enemy has his own horse in the race to find a cure for the virus.
The Leftovers (HBO, 10/9c) — “Penguin One, Us Zero”
In the wake of a series of disturbing encounters, Kevin pays a visit to a therapist. Tom finds himself in a precarious situation with Christine (Annie Q), a favorite of Wayne’s. A frustrated Meg is asked to part with pieces of her past. Jill and Aimee tail Nora Durst (Carrie Coon), who became a local celebrity when her entire family disappeared in the Departure.
