delphoxThat’s a photo of Doctor Who’s new villain. When the show returns to television for a new season, it’ll have a new Doctor played by Peter Capaldi and a new big bad, played by Keeley Hawes.

Hawes’ character, according to Cinema Blend, is called Ms. Delphox and she’s described as “a powerful out-of-this-world character with a dark secret”. The Doctor and his companion Clara will face off with Mrs. Delphox on a “strange and puzzling planet”. That description could, of course, mean just about anything.

Hawes herself doesn’t offer any clues as to what she’s up to on the show. When asked about the character this was all she offered up: “I am delighted to join Doctor Who and to be working with this incredible team. Ms. Delphox is a great character and someone I’ve had a lot of fun playing.”

Brits are likely already familiar with Keeley Hawes. She’s currently the star of a critically acclaimed BBC police drama called Line of Duty.

Some fans are theorizing that Mrs. Delphox could be The Master, returned in female form. I think that’s unlikely, The Master usually looks like he’s having more fun. Besides, The Master’s been done. Doctor Who has a new actor playing The Doctor, an interesting new villain seems warranted too.

What we do know is that Mrs. Delphox’s episode was written by Steve Thompson. Thompson previously wrote two other Doctor Who episodes. Those were “The Curse of the Black Spot” in 2011 and “Journey to the Center of the TARDIS in 2013. His writing credits also include three episodes of Sherlock which, in case you haven’t heard, may be the best non-sci-fi show on television.
