For the Second Doctor, we’ve got Dick Van Dyke rather than Patrick Troughton. This fits well with the Second Doctor’s more whimsical, comical personality, a trait he often used to his advantage, sent it meant enemies would often underestimate him. With the choice made to replace Hartnell after the actor began having trouble remembering his lines, the BBC needed to find just the right actor, somebody who could win over the fans having to deal with the initially jarring notion of “regeneration.” During the late ‘60s Van Dyke had become a huge star thanks to Mary Poppins and The Dick Van Dyke Show, so he would have worked for an American Who, and for similar reasons as Troughton in the British original.
