Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor was a surprising and controversial choice, going with a relative unknown who also didn’t have the traditional good looks of his predecessor (even though I know Smith became a sex symbol for quite a few fans — clearly some chin fetishists out there). Community’s Donald Glover would have brought his own controversy to the role by crossing one boundary the actual series has yet to cross: casting a black actor. Along with the notion of a female Doctor, it’s one of those things that people have been talking about forever, but so far still hasn’t happened. Just as Smith’s star rose with the role of the Doctor, Glover went from being a mostly unknown talent thanks to his role in another cult hit, NBC’s Community. Glover also has a serious knack for humor, something Smith definitely brought to his Doctor. And hey, Glover’s already adventured with an enigmatic time traveler…
