Doctor Who Puts A “Mummy On The Orient Express” (In Space, Naturally)

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that mo’ mummy = mo’ problems. That certainly looks to be the case in the previews for the next episode of Doctor Who, entitled “Mummy on the Orient Express.” Maybe the Doctor could travel back and see if Agatha Christie wants to team up again, because this time the Time Lord is trapped on a spacegoing version of the Orient Express, with a killer mummy stalking the passengers. And to make matters worse, you can’t actually see the mummy unless it’s right about to kill you. (Ideal last words: “Are you my mummy?”)

Without dropping any spoilers for last week’s “Kill the Moon,” this week’s episode finds the Doctor traveling without Clara. That should be interesting to see, as she’s been the more stabilizing/humanizing element in this more unpredictable, often colder Doctor. I’m sure he’ll eventually save the day, but without his “carer” around, the passengers on the train may have to dissuade him from trying plans like “Just open all the airlocks so the mummy gets blown out.”

“Mummy on the Orient Express” was written by Jamie Mathieson, who previously wrote for the British incarnation of Being Human and the BBC’s adaptation of Douglas AdamsDirk Gently series. Mathieson also penned “Flatline,” next week’s episode of “Who.” You can check out the official synopsis for “Mummy on the Orient Express” below, including a seemingly incorrect reference to Clara’s involvement. I’m guessing that was just a spoiler buffer. “Mummy on the Orient Express” premieres Saturday night at 9/8c on BBC America.

The Doctor and Clara are on the most beautiful train in history, speeding among the stars of the future — but they are unaware that a deadly creature is stalking the passengers.

Once you see the horrifying Mummy you only have 66 seconds to live. No exceptions, no reprieve. As the Doctor races against the clock Clara sees him at his deadliest and most ruthless. Will he work out how to defeat the Mummy? Start the clock!
