This Divergent Series: Insurgent Super Bowl Ad Is Beyond Insane

What the hell is going on with The Divergent Series: Insurgent? The first film, which dropped last year and made a significant ripple in the marketplace, was a fairly standard teen-against-the-world YA dystopia joint. The upcoming sequel, which hits theaters in March, however, looks insane, like rampant fever dream come to life. Everything we’ve seen so far, from that early teaser trailer to those motion posters from the other day, borders on psychedelic. This new extended TV spot that will air during the Super Bowl is no exception, this shit is getting bonkers, but you don’t have to wait until Sunday as you can check it out now.

The first film, Divergent didn’t get the best reviews—I myself didn’t particularly care for it—but it has a lot of fans, and though the adaptation of Veronica Roth’s novels was a financial success, you understand why the marketing might take a different approach. And they certainly have.

My guess is that the entire movie isn’t over the top like this, and that all of the really bonkers stuff comes from where they go into heroine Beatrice “Tris” Prior’s (Shailene Woodley) mind. There are a few scenes like that in the first film, but from the look of it, there is going to be even more in Insurgent.

There are flying buildings, structures not so much exploding as bursting into dust, and you can’t help but notice a serious Matrix vibe to what you see in this trailer. I now fully expect Tris to fly around at some point. While it doesn’t tell you much about the story, this video certainly does make it look exciting and like a spectacle you need to see.

InsurgentAfter escaping their oversimplified, oppressive life in Chicago, Tris and her hunky boyfriend Four (Theo James) are now on the run, looking for allies to help them stand up to the nefarious Jeanine (Kate Winslet), the leader of the power-mad Erudite faction. At the same time, they continue to search for the answers about what makes them so dangerous and powerful. With Four by her side, and evil nipping at their heels, Tris has to discover what her family sacrificed themselves to protect, discover secrets from the past, and hopefully save the world in the process. No pressure for a young woman or anything. If I had to wager, I’d guess things don’t get entirely resolved in this movie, as there are still two more—Allegiant parts one and two—on the way over the next few years.

The Divergent Series: Insurgent also stars Zoe Kravitz, Ansel Elgort, Octavia Spencer, and Naomi Watts, and hits theaters in Imax 3D on March 20.
