Digging Up The Marrow Trailer Is A Monstrous Good Time

While I can’t say I’ve been a huge fan of Adam Green’s career over the years, I’ve liked his psychological thrillers Frozen and Spiral more than the Hatchet films and his TV series Holliston. Why immediately start off with a weird compliment/insult combination? Because Digging Up the Marrow looks like it might be an amazingly creepy trip through a creature-filled underground, but I want to keep my expectations tethered. Check out the first trailer below.

Green stars as himself in Digging Up the Marrow, and his life changes forever when he gets a mysterious letter from a potential psycho played by genre maestro Ray Wise (Twin Peaks). Wise’s character claims that monsters are real and that he knows where to find them, deep underground, where darkness covers all.

With his interest fully in charge, Green decides to turn this story into fodder for a documentary, which gives the film its mock-doc format. Considering it’s Green’s first time jumping into found-footage-ish things, I certainly hope he brought a knowledge of the sub-genre’s worst attributes and avoided the shit out of all of them. There are a few moments in the trailer where things get a little stereotypical, such as when it’s dark and people are yelling, or when Green is reaching out to the camera. But that’s small potatoes.

I’ll deal with some tropes if I get to see some scary ass monsters. The movie was partly inspired by the work of artist Alex Pardee, who did creature design work for the film. And it’s awesome that it isn’t just a bunch of the same kind of creature, but rather a variety of WTF spooks and ghouls. Like this guy.

I don’t often shit my pants inside of a vehicle, but when I do, it’s because that son of a bitch gets in the way of my car. It kind of sucks that we only get a limited number of creature shots in the trailer, but I’m a firm believer of the less is more theory. Especially if this drawing is a teaser of an actual two-headed beast to be found later in the film.

Co-starring horror vets such as Kane Hodder, Mick Garris, Don Coscarelli and more, Digging Up the Marrow will hopefully cause some nightmares when it gets a limited theatrical run on February 20, at which point it also hits VOD. Those wanting more physical media will be happy when the DVD is released on March 24.
