Programming on Syfy is hit or miss. The upcoming Defiance, from Farscape creator Rockne S. O’Bannon looks great, but will it live up to that potential? Syfy has made answering that question just a little bit easier, with the first 14 minutes of the Defiance pilot now available online for your viewing pleasure. Usually not much can be gained from only 14 minutes, but Defiance does a fantastic job establishing their world and character relationships in a quick and engaging way. Check it out:

Defiance is the latest offering from Syfy, and it’s also one of its riskiest. While science fiction TV shows aren’t anything new, tying in a massively multiplayer online game (MMO) along with it is very ambitious.

The series (and game) is set in the near future, after an alien race has migrated to Earth after their star system was destroyed. Unaware Earth was inhabited, the aliens arrived and found themselves at odds with the natives. After seven years of war, the Earth was scorched when terraforming technology was released into the atmosphere, which became hazardous to both humans and aliens. Both must now work together to re-build civilization.

The TV series takes place in a new border town called Defiance (on the site of what used to be St. Louis), while the MMO takes place in San Francisco. Both platforms will launch in the same month, but it’s unclear if audiences will take to this new form of storytelling.

The Defiance TV series will premiere on April 15th on Syfy, while the Defiance MMO will launch on April 2nd for Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Steam.
