I’ve often heard the phrase “monkey with a handgun” tossed around, but now it looks like we may get exactly that scenario in the upcoming Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Fox has released a new teaser image for Dawn that suggests Caesar’s ape army will be embracing their second amendment rights. (Okay, I realize they’re apes, not monkeys, but just work with me here.) Here’s the new image, released with the tagline, “Evolution becomes revolution.” That reminds me of Bill Hicks, which makes me smile, but then makes me sad. Stupid Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is set for release on May 23, 2014, with Matt Reeves (Let Me In) attached to direct. Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, who wrote Rise of the Planet of the Apes, also wrote the original script for Dawn, which has sent been handed off the screenwriter Mark Bomback (Total Recall, the upcoming Wolverine movie) for rewrites. Andy Serkis, whose brilliant motion-capture performance as the intelligence-enhanced ape Caesar, will return for Dawn as well.

Here’s a short synopsis of what we can expect in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes:

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes continues the story of how ultra-intelligent simian Caesar (Andy Serkis) presides over the fall of human civilization. After the apes break out of their facility, a virus breaks out that causes the collapse of human society. The new project is taking the story to the next level, with the apes on the path to emerge as society’s new rulers.
