Andy SerkisAlthough the film will not be released until May 2014, we’ve got a first look at the production of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The sequel to 2011’s surprise hit Rise of the Planet of the Apes should be one of the most anticipated movies of summer 2014. The leaked location images below show off the production’s multiple motion-capture ape actors in the forests of Vancouver, Canada, including Andy Serkis as Caesar. Keri Russell and Jason Clarke were also spotted, playing some of the film’s human characters.

The leaked images were courtesy of Daily Mail, and they remind us that director Matt Reeves has a lot to live up to after the success of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Without Rise stars James Franco or Freida Pinto returning for the new sequel, it’s unclear if Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will have the same high quality as its predecessor.

Recently, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes added Arrested Development‘s Judy Greer as Caesar’s ape love interest Cornelia, who was introduced briefly at the beginning of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The character’s name references Cornelius, the character played by Roddy McDowall in the original Planet of the Apes in 1969. Dawn‘s cast will also include Kodi Smit-McPhee and Gary Oldman.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is set 15 years after the events of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The film will follow two storylines, one involving a group of scientists trying to survive in San Francisco, and the other centered Caesar trying to maintain dominance over the other self-aware apes.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will hit theaters everywhere on May 21, 2014.
