ApesSkullThere’s definitely an art to making a truly memorable movie poster. And that’s even more true these days, when Hollywood all too often falls back on one of a handful of templates they just keep recycling over and over and over again. So far the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ official posters have mostly focused on Caesar’s scowling, war-painted mug or the striking image of him wielding an assault rifle on horseback in front of the crumbling Golden Gate Bridge. Now 20th Century Fox has premiered a new batch of fan-designed Apes posters in a variety of styles, all the better to get you ready for the ape-on-human mayhem to hit theaters next weekend.

The poster up top is easily my favorite. It was created by artist Janee Meadows and premiered over at Collider. Be sure to hit up her website to check out the rest of her stuff. She’s got some very cool stuff up, including this retro-style Elysium poster that reminds me a lot of the ones from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Next up below is UK artist Matt Needle’s “Hail Caesar” poster, which was premiered on /Film earlier this week. It reminds me a bit of some of Juan Ortiz’s episodic posters he did for all the episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series. You can see more of Needle’s work here. He’s done a ton of movie posters in a very stark, minimalist style, and I particularly dig his pair of Cronenberg-inspired prints.

I also really dig the “Coronation of Caesar” poster below, which was created by Orlando Arocena, and which premiered over on Hero Complex. I love the bright, regal colors that suggest both royalty — tying into the coronation idea — and the world going up in flames.
