David Yates Insists He Really Is Rebooting Doctor Who As A Movie

A few months ago Harry Potter director announced that he was doing a Doctor Who movie. Further he told everyone that his movie would ignore all established Doctor Who lore and basically reboot the Who universe from scratch. Nearly everyone, except for David Yates, agrees that this is one of the most horrible ideas anyone has ever had.

But at the time there seemed to be no cause for alarm because everyone currently involved with Doctor Who, like showrunner Stephen Moffat, was quick to come out and say that Yates his off his rocker, he’s not doing a Doctor Who movie, he’ll never do a Doctor Who movie, and that there was nothing to any of it.

Yates doesn’t appear to have gotten the memo.

He’s started talking about his horrible Doctor Who movie again and he continues to insist that he’s actually making this abortion. Here’s what Yates had to say as picked up by Bleeding Cool

Yes, I’m definitely doing a Doctor Who movie. But I think where everyone got confused was that we’re not making it for five years, or six years – it’s a very slow development. I’ve got projects backed up between now and about 2015, and it’s something I’m very passionate and excited about.

Stephen’s a genius. I love his work, I think he’s incredibly clever. I love what he’s done with Doctor Who, love his Sherlock Holmes. He’s such a gifted man. But this is something that’s a very slow burn and I’m hoping to sit down with him at some point and have a chat. It’s just something that we’ve been talking about for a little while.

Let’s run this through the bullshit translator a little bit. In the first paragraph he attempts to assert that the only reason everyone says this isn’t happening is that it’s so far off. That doesn’t make a lot of sense.

In the second paragraph he attempts to hint that Moffat just isn’t in the loop. He spends a lot of time complimenting him like crazy, but what Yates is really trying to intimate is that Moffat, even though he’s in charge of the entire Who empire right now, doesn’t know anything about what’s happening with Doctor Who and won’t know until he sits down to tell him. If true, boy that would suck.

Dumb Idea with a capital D and a capital I.  What happened to innovation in the world?  When did it become fashionable to be lazy and simply reboot rather than continue or originate?  Granted there are somethings in need of a reboot or fresh start but not everything. Tell an original story, tell a story that is in between or outside of the current mythos but make it ORIGINAL.

Doctor Who is quite possibly the only series ever created that WILL NOT need a relaunch of any type other than when a new actor takes the part. As long as the writers/producers keep everything in context (Cybermen stay Cybermen, Daleks stay Daleks, etc.) then it could conceivably  run another 100 years easily.

I don’t see how you could do a Doctor Who movie WITHOUT ignoring the decades of continuity. If you are going to do a movie you would have to keep in mind that half or more of the people who would be coming to see it would have never seen any of the shows. You couldn’t cram in even the very basic overview ideas of all of that history and then do the rest of the movie as an original story. You would have to take all of the basic concepts of Doctor Who and basically start from scratch.

Or you could, you know, just go with it and the people who watch would figure it out just like fans do when they start watching the program? You don’t need to know all the history to understand what’s going on in the current series, why would it be any different for a film?

I think a movie would be great, but only if it includes the current Doctor and his fellow travelers…If indeed the movie is in the future then they need to be aware that changing everything about the show is NOT a Dr Who movie, but a made up movie with nothing to do with the show we have all come to know and love…David Tennent was so much my hero that I was terribly upset when he left, but I have been totally won over by Matt….I would not watch any movie that refuses to follow the story line of a show that has been around since 63 and is listed in the Guinness book of world records as the longest running Sci Fi show..Hopefully this is a false rummer and that the people who have control of the show are smart enough to realize that this would be a mistake…The only thing I don’t like about Dr. Who is that there are not enough shows being made and I can’t wait till it comes back on….Whovians unite…stand behind our show

Oh for the love of God! Doctor Who’s brand manager also said that a Doctor Who reboot movie is NOT happening and that Steven Moffat’s words on the subject are final. David Yates is full of shit and he’s playing with fire! Someone from the BBC better call him to tell him to shut up and stop lying through his teeth. It’s one thing for Yates to say he wants to do a Doctor Who movie but to claim he is doing one when everyone else says otherwise is incredibly stupid of him.

Dr. Who is about the history, continuity & tradition if nothing else.
The series now (since the revival) has honored that tradition and improved on it.
The power of the Dr. is the strength of his past lives & experiences,
and the continued play off the past stories.
It’s one long continuous history, and that’s partly why we love it.
It’s a recipe that works, better than all the crap on the tube these days.
    TRADITION !!!!
Dr. Who has only gotten better.
it’s not broken, damaged or in need of any repair or changes !
The writers, actors, casting, producers, set designers, editors, etc..
    are doing a phenomenal job.
Today’s Dr. is the wet dream of the past Dr.’s, and all the die hard fans.
We finally have the show exactly as it should be and have wanted, don’t change a thing.
What gives David Yates the right to assume he can do better ?
    The nerve.
Keep your stinkin paws of the DR.!
    Expelliamous  David Yates.

Alright, Since I appear to be the only informed one.  *deep in-ha;e* Yates is a VERY competent director. He’s note “Re-booting” The series in the sense that he’s starting over from the first doctor. He’s just not following the timeline from the t.v. series. Think of it like an alternate timeline, where in instead of the 15th or 16th doctor being whomever it is, it’s a different actor with a different cast that go on completely different adventures.

I trust Yates enough as a director enough that he’ll make a fairly, if not Extremely, good movie, and I’m sure if he explains his thoughts to Moffat well enough, Moffat will be glad to help write it.

Tl;Dr, Josh Tyler, is either too stupid, or too lazy to do any amount of actual research into the topic.

  • Moffat

    Someone needs to reboot Yates.

I would love to see a video of Moffat telling Yates to sod off.
