First Look At David Morrissey As The Governor In The Walking Dead

The third season of AMC’s The Walking Dead, currently filming in Atlanta, will introduce The Governor, one of the grimmest villains from Robert Kirkman’s comic book. British actor David Morrissey is playing the despot, and this photo provides the first glimpse at the bad guy.

In the comics the Governor rules over a small enclave of survivors called Woodbury. He stages violent games for the amusement of the citizens, and when the group of survivors headed by Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) stumble into town, things get rough. We won’t spoil anything for those of you who haven’t read the comics, but the characters go through a small slice of hell, and they don’t all make it out entirely intact.

Some people, myself included, have expressed worry that the TV version of the Governor might not be as badass and hellish as Kirkman originally envisioned. Talking to TV Guide, the writer said:

The Governor in the show is definitely going to be The Governor in the comic…I think that he’s definitely going to be a character that people love to hate and are absolutely entertained by, but also somewhat terrified of. He’s definitely going to be a very important character and a very nuanced character. We are not going to be watering him down.

That’s good news for fans. But still, the storyline gets violent, brutal, and nasty beyond belief, so it’ll be curious to see if they can actually pull it off to the degree they want to. This is AMC, not HBO. I hope they do, because the story arc they’re getting into is one of my favorites, and I’ll be really sad if they screw it up.

What do you guys think about Morrissey’s look? My two cents is that he looks a little too clean cut, not like he’s been through some battles. Then again, this is just the first glimpse. Maybe it’s from early on, before you realize what a psychopath he is.

“This is AMC, not HBO” is exactly what I’m worried about. That particular segment of the storyline is pretty horrific and without the full brutality it will lose something. I guess we’ll see.

As for the character, I think he needs to look a bit more shifty. He had greasy long hair and a kind of handlebar moustache thing going on in the comic. He just looked seedy and that’s missing here.

Whatever, this show has already crossed premium – cable tv lines, I don’t think it will be an issue….

As for Michonne nailing something of his to a board, I don’t think we’ll get that much, but it should be pretty violent(FACE SMASH ZOMBIE SCENE IN SEASON 2 ANYONE)?

As for the daughter character, I don’t think AMC will go that for though. If you remember.
