Microsoft’s Halo franchise has been serving up high-quality, high-budget commercials for years now. It’s the sort of material that has got to rub salt into the wounds of all the fans who are still waiting impatiently for the Halo movie that may never actually arrive. But even if we’ll never get to see the adventures of Master Chief in an honest-to-gosh summer blockbuster, there is a new game on the horizon, and with it comes yet another badass Halo trailer. And this time around none other than director David Fincher is on board to help blow the doors off.

A still from the upcoming Halo 4 live-action trailer.

IGN reports that Fincher is executive producing the Halo 4 launch trailer, which is said to focus on the backstory of the series’ stoic, heroic lead, Master Chief. While Fincher isn’t directing the spot, Microsoft has recruited another Hollywood vet for the gig. The trailer, called “Scanned,” will be directed by Tim Miller, who was the effects lead on the (notoriously effects-heavy) Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Here’s what Miller had to say about the project:

Halo is one of the most iconic sci-fi universes, with a depth that allows for amazingly cinematic and emotionally riveting stories. The chance to tell a story that explores never-before-seen facets of Master Chief’s journey is an honor. Our goal is to deliver a blockbuster, Hollywood-quality trailer that raises the bar for the award-winning legacy of live-action Halo storytelling and gets fans stoked for the return of Master Chief.

“Scanned” will premiere on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, October 18th. Like many of the Halo trailers before, this one will merge live-action and CGI elements, and will focus on both Master Chief’s history and on introducing the new threat he’ll be up against in Halo 4.
