Comic(s) Relief: The Tenth And Eleventh Doctors’ Adventures Will Continue In Upcoming Series

TenNo matter how much you love any given incarnation of the Doctor, his adventures must inevitably draw to a close at some point. Of course, that’s the case with any story — they can’t just carry on forever (as my class-action lawsuit against The NeverEnding Story will attest) — but the nice thing about Doctor Who is that, every time one Doctor bows out, another takes the stage. I’m certainly looking forward to seeing what Peter Capaldi brings to the table, but having just rewatched the show’s modern seasons, I do feel a little bit nostalgic about David Tennant and Matt Smith’s respective takes on the time lord. If you feel the same, we’ve got some good news: two new ongoing comic book series will chronicle further “untold” adventures of the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors!

IDW Publishing has held the comics right to Doctor Who for a while now, publishing stories about both the modern and the classic Doctors. These two new series, however, are coming from Titan Comics. It’s unclear at this point if this means IDW will stop publishing Who titles or if the two companies will be able to publish stories about the Doctor concurrently. The press release only specifies the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors, so I’m guessing IDW may be keeping the Classic Doctor rights, with Titan handling the modern Doctors. That would seem to track because the release also says that they’ll be publishing a third series about the Twelfth Doctor once the show returns for season eight.

Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor will be penned by Eisner Award-winning cartoonist/writer Nick Abadzis, with Elena Casagrande (Doctor Who, Star Trek) providing the art. They’ll be handling the series’ first story arc, after which writer Robbie Morrison (Drowntown, The Authority) will take over for the second. One intriguing detail: the press release says Ten’s new series will involve both new foes and a new companion. It’ll be interesting to see where in the timeline this new series falls.

Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor will be written by “series architects” Al Ewing (Mighty Avengers) and Rob Williams (The Royals: Masters of War, Trifecta), and Simon Fraser (Grindhouse, Doctor Who) will be the artist. Unfortunately, the release is even less forthcoming when it comes to teasing the Eleventh Doctor’s ongoing adventures than it is with the Tenth’s. They promise “a time-twisting leap into the unknown” and “a whirlwind adventure through eternity for the Eleventh Doctor.” Very evocative; very vague.

Artist Alice X. Zhang will be doing the covers for both series, which you can see above (and presumably for the Twelfth Doctor’s series as well, but the release doesn’t say either way). Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor and Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor will hit comics stands on July 23, 2014.
