This past weekend, audiences across the country were dazzled and mesmerized by the film Cloud Atlas. But clocking in at an overwhelming 172 minutes, six storylines that bridge various movie genres, and actors playing multiple character roles that span over gender lines, ethnicities, and time periods, the giant film could easily be lost in the shuffle.

It was only a matter of time before the Internet would create a simple “how-to” guide for enjoying the Wachowskis’ and Tom Tykwer’s latest effort. Our good friends at CinemaBlend.com love Cloud Atlas, and to show their admiration for the movie, they’ve made a handy infographic to ease the troubles of bewildered moviegoers. Check out the infographic below, and you can click the image for a bigger version.

Cloud Atlas features a large array of characters played by a small number of actors. It’s really impressive to see how these actors took on the daunting task of putting on wigs and makeup to take up various roles. The infographic above is not so cut and dried, but it’s the best illustration of what actually is going on in the film. The asterisks in the infographic represent an elusive character whose image couldn’t be found. Not all the multiple characters in Cloud Atlas have substantial screen time.

Cloud Atlas is a force that shouldn’t be fought against while watching the film. It should be viewed as a wave washing over you, otherwise you’ll simply get lost in the movie like a rip tide pulling you underwater. It’s not a very conventional way to watch a movie, but Cloud Atlas isn’t a very conventional film.
