As one of the most polarizing movies of 2012, the Wachowskis and German director Tom Tykwer’s Cloud Atlas is an ambitious film that embraces different genres and forms of storytelling. Upon its theatrical release, general audiences seemed uninterested in a story that spanned over 1,000 years of human history. Hopefully Cloud Atlas will find a bigger audience when it’s released on home video this May.

Last October, Cloud Atlas took in a paltry $27 million domestically and was pronounced dead on arrival when it opened in theaters. Audiences didn’t seem interested in its thought-provoking narrative and all-star cast, including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Sturgess, Doona Bae, Ben Whishaw, Hugh Grant, Hugo Weaving, Xun Zhou, Jim Broadbent, James D’Arcy, Susan Sarandon, and Keith David.

As for the home video release, the Blu-ray will include a majority of the film’s bonus features, including cast and crew interviews, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and a look at how the Wachowskis and Tykwer adapted David Mitchell’s novel into a movie. The DVD will only include one bonus feature. Check out the full list of supplemental materials below:

As awards season comes to a close for another year, it’s almost sad to see Cloud Atlas being forgotten or snubbed. The film’s visual effects alone deserved some recognition from the Academy of Arts and Sciences, but luckily Cloud Atlas received five Saturn Award nominations, including Best Science Fiction Film.

Once the movie is readily available on Netflix, iTunes, and in RedBoxes across the country, maybe people will check it out. It is one of the better sci-fi movies of the past year, so it seems like a movie like Cloud Atlas will grow in reputation in time.

Cloud Atlas will be available on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital download on May 14th.
