Matt DamonAs principal photography gets started on Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, genre fans are very happy to see the world-class director return to science fiction after The Dark Knight trilogy. The last time Christopher Nolan took on sci-fi was in 2010 with the Academy Award-nominated Inception. While some believe Inception is the best Nolan has to offer, it will be very interesting to see if the 43-year-old director can top it with the space epic Interstellar.

According to The Playlist, actor Matt Damon was a last-minute addition to the film’s already impressive cast. Damon is just coming off of Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium, so it’s good to see the actor back in the science fiction genre again. Matt Damon’s role is “undisclosed” at the moment.

Damon will reportedly only shoot with Christopher Nolan for two weeks in Iceland, while the rest of the cast scheduled for a four-month shoot. It is believed that Damon’s role is more than a cameo appearance, but not a major role.

Interstellar will be the first time Matt Damon has worked on a Christopher Nolan film. Damon has appeared in a number of science fiction films throughout his career, starting with Don Bluth’s underrated animated film Titan A.E. Aside from his recent starring role in Blomkamp’s Elysium, Damon took a role in Steven Soderbergh’s viral outbreak movie Contagion in 2011.

As for Interstellar, production recently began on the space epic. Interstellar is based on the writings of theoretical physicist and astrophysicist Kip Thorne, who is also one of the film’s creative consultants and executive producers. Throne’s work deals with black hole cosmology, gravitational waves, and theoretical time travel. Paramount also recently released the film’s official synopsis:

The new script chronicles the adventures of a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.

Ever since The Dark Knight in 2008, Christopher Nolan likes using the IMAX technology on his films, and A few months ago, IMAX Entertainment announced that a significant portion of the science fiction film will be shot using IMAX cameras.

Interstellar features a world-class cast of actors and Christopher Nolan regulars including Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, John Lithgow, Casey Affleck, David Gyasi, Wes Bentley, Mackenzie Foy, Timothée Chalamet, Topher Grace, David Oyelowo, Ellen Burstyn, and (of course) Michael Caine.

Christopher Nolan co-wrote the screenplay for Interstellar with his writing partner and brother, Jonathan. He is producing the film with his producing partner and wife, Emma Thomas. Lynda Obst will also produce the film, with Hans Zimmer composing the score.

Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar will hit theaters everywhere on November 7, 2014, in IMAX.
