Guardians of the GalaxyGuardians of the Galaxy is a gorgeous film. It may be full of high action, sarcastic humor, and a talking raccoon and tree, but director James Gunn, Marvel, and everyone involved also took great pains to create an immersive, fully realized world. When you strive to create something wholly new and different and alien, it takes a lot of time and effort, and starts and stops and different versions, as we’ve seen from the constant flow of concept art that has trickled out since the film hit theaters back in August. Because we can never get enough of this sort of thing, we’ve get even more with this extensive gallery.

These are from artist Olivier Pron, who served as the lead matte painter for Guardians of the Galaxy, and they show off some of the ideas for Xandar, the home planet of the Nova Corps, and where a significant amount of the action is set. There’s something about many of these that almost feel like a dreamy videogame, like you and your avatar could roam these environments and get into all kinds of mischief and adventures.

Guardians of the GalaxyWhile some are bright and airy and closely resemble what we see of Xandar in the finished movie, there are some that are a little darker, a little more grim, and that have an almost dystopian, quasi Blade Runner feel to them.

Guardians of the GalaxyPron’s work here is epic and sprawling, which makes sense because he’s worked on tons of other big time sci-fi and comic book properties. For instance, he was a concept artist on Iron Man 3 for Marvel, and worked on Zack Snyder’s adaptation of Alan Moore’s Watchmen, not to mention turns on X-Men: The Last Stand and the Wachowski’s Cloud Atlas. If you couldn’t tell just from his work, the dude knows what he’s doing.

Guardians of the GalaxyIf it feels like we haven’t stopped talking about Guardians of the Galaxy in like a year (or more), that’s because we really haven’t. There was the build up, the actual movie, how successful it was, it’s potential place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, crossovers with the Avengers (or not), the soundtrack, all those awesome Blu-ray features and behind the scenes ephemera, and so much more. And the movie is pretty damn awesome, too.

Guardians of the GalaxySo check out this extensive collection of Pron’s work (you can see more of his stuff at his website), pop Guardians of the Galaxy in your Blu-ray player, and sit back, because we have a while to wait until Guardians of the Galaxy 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
