Check Out A Blueprint For A Jaeger, One Of Pacific Rim’s Massive Robots

Pacific Rim pretty much had us at hello here at GFR’s secret orbital headquarters. Honestly, it would have my attention simply thanks to the involvement of Guillermo del Toro. But it was also written by Travis Beacham, who penned one of my favorite unproduced screenplays ever (a steampunk/dark fantasy detective story called A Killing on Carnival Row). When you add in the fact that the movie involves giant robots punching giant sea monsters in the face, they’re really just running up the score at that point. Now the Pacific Rim marketing campaign has unleashed another dose of awesome: a blueprint for one of the flick’s massive robotic war machines, called “Jaegers.” (You can click for an embiggened version.)

The blueprints were released by the “Pan Pacific Defense Corps,” which I imagine is a fancy way of saying “badass giant robot pilots.” We’ll be seeing different models of the “Jaegers,” but this model goes by the slightly perplexing name of the “Gipsy Danger.” Okay, that name does make it slightly less badass, but since it’s a giant, monster-fighting robot, it’s got plenty of badassery to spare. At any rate, if you’ve got the materials and a couple of billion dollars, you should have no trouble building one of these for yourself.

The blueprints are part of the Pacific Rim viral campaign that kicked off today with a video “test” of the Kaiju Emergency Alert System and a letter recruiting new Jaeger pilots. You can bet we’ll see a lot more in the next few weeks as we lead up to the release of the first official trailer, likely attached to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Pacific Rim opens in theaters on July 12, 2013.
