Since we got our very first look at Neill Blomkamp’s new robot drama Chappie, which finally opens in theaters this weekend, there has been discussion about how much the film, or at least what we’ve seen of it, resembles another similarly themed movie, Short Circuit. Such talk has been so prevalent that that I’m surprised this hasn’t happened sooner, but here it is, the inevitable Short Circuit/Chappie mashup. Check out Chappie 5 is Alive below.

YouTube user Lance Ford cut the two films together. I’d already noticed similarities, it’s admittedly been many years since I’ve watched Short Circuit, but it’s remarkable how well they go together. He lays the sound from Chappie over the images of the earlier film, and it could very well be from the same damn movie. I did also almost spit a mouthful of coffee all over my computer screen when the squeaky, childlike voice of Yolandi Vi$$er, half of South African rap-rave duo Die Antwoord, comes out of Ally Sheedy’s mouth.

In the near future of Chappie, an oppressive government uses a mechanized police force to keep the boot on the neck of the people. When a couple of hoods steal one of these drones, hoping to further their own criminal enterprises, they get much more than they bargained for. A new breed of artificial intelligence, Chappie, could be the only hope for the future of humanity as they rebel against those in charge. Sounds right up Blomkamp’s alley.

Reviews have thus far have been mixed, with some saying there is a lot to admire and appreciate in Chappie, while others call this another misstep for Blomkamp after Elysium. We haven’t seen it yet, but you can catch it at early shows starting tonight.

Chappie stars Dev Patel, Ninja and Yolandi Vi$$Ser, Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver, and Sharlto Copley as the title robot.
