Taking existing geek properties and making them darker or grittier seems to be a trend on the Internet. The fan-created videos of Y: The Last Man and The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers recently are perfect examples of re-imagining familiar characters in realistic situations. Now some Captain Planet fans have given the trailer treatment to the ’90s ecological cartoon, Captain Planet and the Planeteers.

Much like the Power Rangers fan trailer, this Captain Planet vid takes place after the end of the series’ run. The Planeteers haven’t used their rings to call upon Earth’s greatest champion, Captain Planet, in 10 years. In the meantime, the series’ super-villains Looten Plunder and Dr. Blight have joined forces to destroy Earth’s natural resources to make a quick buck. The Planeteers must rejoin to put an end to the ecological madness. Check out the trailer:

The Captain Planet trailer comes from indie production company Altermotion Media Entertainment and director Jay Diaz. The company was formed in 2007, with executive producers Jay Diaz and Daniel Marcha at the helm. They found critical acclaim in 2011 with the web series Casual, which will be turned into a feature film in 2012.

Like The Mighty Morphin’ Power RangersCaptain Planet and the Planeteers are long overdue for a renaissance, if only to placate the nostalgia of children of the ’90s.
