Buck Rogers 3D By Way Of Aliens Vs. Predators

In a way, I suppose it’s appropriate. Paul W.S. Anders, the guy who ruined two sci-fi franchises with his Aliens vs. Predator debacle, has been hired to direct a new, big screen take on Buck Rogers… in 3D of course. It’s appropriate because throughout its history Buck Rogers has always been relegated to being some sort of cheesy, clumsy, sci-fi cash-in. I was really hoping someone might take it seriously this time, but I suppose it’s par for the course where Buck’s concerned.

It’s not all bad news though. Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, who had a hand in writing the script for Iron Man, are working on a screenplay for Buck Rogers.

Buck Rogers has appeared in dozens of different incarnations since his creation in the 1920s. People are probably most familiar with the short lived, 1979 – 1981 television show in which Wil Gerard starred as an airforce pilot frozen for 500 years and reawakened in the 25th Century.

But let’s face it, the TV series was noteworthy mostly because it starred the epically hot Erin Gray as the skintight uniform-wearing Wilma Deering:

Erin’s hypnotic hotness aside, the best Buck Rogers has always been in print. Check out The Martian Wars Trilogy written by M.S. Murdock.

Not all is lost! The folks at Retro Film Studios LLC and Cawley Entertainment Company, of Star Trek New Voyages, are well into production of a new “Buck Rogers Begins” web series. There is a pilot trailer over at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YY0-lSg3-k&feat… and the earlier rocket trailer at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rvx6BBkxz4 . Their website and releases state an Autumn 2010 release of the pilot is planned.

Why check out the three minute trailer? Well, how about Erin Gray and Gil Gerard! They are cast as Buck's parents, Frances & William Rogers!

There is also a cafe press merchandise store at http://www.cafepress.com/BuckRogersGear .

The story premise is retro-future, starting pre-WWI so that we will see Buck's US Army Flying Corps adventures before he goes to sleep to awaken 500 years later.
