Browncoats: The Firefly LEGO Set Needs Your Support

Earlier this week we wrote about the possibility of a Back to the Future LEGO set. Now is your chance to help another beloved sci-fi entity get the chance to be rendered in small, plastic, stackable blocks. Joss Whedon’s short-lived, rabidly-loved space western Firefly needs your help to become a LEGO reality.

LEGO CUUSOO is a website where individuals and groups can register and post ideas for playsets. If an idea receives enough votes, enough popular support from likeminded fans like you, it will be reviewed by a panel of conceptual folks at the company and can become a real live LEGO set. In order to reach this level, a project needs 10,000 supporters. At the moment, the Serenity Firefly playset hovers at around 8,700 votes (despite having over 17k likes on Facebook, all those people should log in and pledge their support).

The design centers around the ship Serenity—the titular inspiration for the film Serenity that Whedon and the cast made when Firefly was cancelled after a single season—and will feature a playable dining room and cargo hold, and a cockpit with space for one mini figurine.

The Serenity will look something like this:

And don’t worry, all of your favorite characters will be represented in miniature, including Inara (Morena Baccarin), Book (Ron Glass), Jayne (Adam Baldwin), Mal (Nathan Fillion), and Kaylee (Jewel Staite)…

…as well as Wash (Alan Tudyk), Zoe (Gina Torres), Simon (Sean Maher), and River (Summer Glau).

Now is your chance to sign up and throw your weight behind yet another fun, sci-fi themed LEGO set. Firefly crewmembers like Fillion, Baldwin, and Baccarin have all tweeted their support for this project. Some comments have voiced concern over the inclusion of Inara, who is the space equivalent of a courtesan, but as designer “tbone_tbl” writes, LEGO “managed to make the Temple of Doom kid friendly.”
