See Brent Spiner Playing Spock In A Fun Make-Em Up

There was a time when, if you’d asked just about anyone, they’d have said Brent Spiner was the most likely Next Generation cast member to have a big acting career beyond Star Trek. We were wrong. Obviously it was Patrick Stewart. Though Spiner has gone on to have a nice career as a character actor, it’s hard not to wish he’d been able to pull off the knighthood level roles Stewart has landed.

Maybe he’s not all that bitter about how things turned out, but he’s doing a webseries about how he might be bitter. It’s called Fresh Hell and in it Brent Spiner plays Brent Spiner as an out of work actor who has sunk so low he’s been reduced to appearing at children’s birthday parties. At this particular birthday party, he’s forced to play Spock. Watch…

Fresh Hell debuts new episodes once a month. Get them on the show’s official site where you can also get a t-shirt which proudly proclaims, “at least I’m not Brent Spiner.”

Sadly this is probably the most likable role I’ve seen Spiner in since Data…. pretty much everything else was a rehashed version of Lore or that dickwad scientist in Independence Day. It’s sort of ironic considering that he wanted to avoid being type cast as Data and consequently made a career out of forgettable roles irritatingly similar to Data’s evil… wait, no, not evil… Data’s obnoxious twin.

It may not be fair to assume he had a choice in those roles. Likely that’s just what he could get, that’s all anyone was offering him and it was those roles or nothing.

Perhaps, but I’ll put it this way, I always got the impression that Spiner really liked the Lore character, there have been several examples of Lore like characters showing up (including emotion chip Data), and I just never cared for it. Ofcourse Spiner himself made comments in an interview about being annoyed with people that expect him to be like Data in real life while in reality he is apparently quite sarcastic (perhaps more Lore like?). As a matter of fact I had grown to sort of expect him to be a Lore like prick in real life… that’s the good thing about this clip… it shows him as more of a regular and very human guy. Not to say that any of this makes me right and Spiner wrong, but what can I say, I grew up with Data and loved him!

I’m not sure he does, he’s just playing a character in this.
