Blade Runner Gets An Updated 30th Anniversary Trailer

We’re now 30 years past the theatrical premiere of Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, a film whose influences are still being felt throughout the landscape of films, television, and games. Since Hollywood never met an anniversary it couldn’t exploit, naturally there’s a snazzy new 30th Anniversary Collector’s Edition release of the film scheduled for next month. Now Warner Home Video has releases a brand-new, updated trailer to promote the release, and it’s a bit of an odd duck. Just check it out and we’ll talk more below.
Obviously Warners wants to really hype up this new Blade Runner release, so why not put together a slick new trailer? The results however, come off as kind of jarring and odd. I think it’s simply the familiar footage mixed with decidedly 21st century trailer techniques and cliches. It just feels wrong. I’m also not crazy about the echo they’ve added to some of the dialogue. That just feels like Fan Trailer 101.
In spite of the bizarre trailer touches, one thing that does stand out is that, even three decades later, Blade Runner looks better than 90% of the movies in theaters right now. How many other films from 1982 have aged even half as well as Scott’s SF noir classic? Some people may still be giving Scott shit about Prometheus — and deservedly so in some cases — but as far as I’m concerned he could have retired after Blade Runner and still been considered one of the best filmmakers of all time.
The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack of Blade Runner‘s 30th Anniversary Collector’s Edition is scheduled to release on October 23rd. And for the curious, here’s Blade Runner‘s original theatrical trailer.
