Bill & Ted
“Strange things are afoot at the Circle K.” About a year and a half ago, Alex Winter revealed that Bill & Ted 3 was in the works as screenwriters Chris Matheson & Ed Solomon already finished its script. For the next few months, details about the project emerged as Bill & Ted 3 would take place in real-time, more than 20 years after the events of Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey in 1991. Galaxy Quest director Dean Parisot was attached to direct and Keanu Reeves would reprise his role as Ted “Theodore” Logan and Alex Winter would return as Bill S. Preston Esq. The last bit of news about Bill & Ted 3 was about a year ago and we haven’t heard anything much about the project since.

As reported on IGN.com, during the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour, Keanu Reeves, who was on the tour to promote his documentary Side By Side for PBS (It’s highly recommended and now available for streaming on Netflix Instant), shed some light on the whereabouts of Bill & Ted 3. Apparently, Bill & Ted 3 is still in development with final drafts of the screenplay being completed. Reeves added that he’s very excited about the new film. Reeves explained:

“There have been a couple of drafts [of a Bill & Ted 3 script] and right now we’re waiting on the writers to come up with another draft,” Reeves said. “But we’re all very excited.”

Reeves also added that Bill & Ted 3 would also honor the memory of comedian George Carlin, who played Bill & Ted’s mentor Rufus in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. Carlin died of heart failure at age 71 in 2008.

Last year, in an interview with GQ, Keanu Reeves revealed a few plot details about the forthcoming Bill & Ted 3. The new movie would follow Bill & Ted still trying to write the world’s greatest song 20 years later. The pair would travel through history, time, and alternate universes to meet other versions of themselves who have and have not written the world’s greatest song. At the time, Bill & Ted 3 was described as a comedy in the vein of Hot Tub Time Machine.

It has been well over 20 years since we saw Bill & Ted in Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. Both Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves are now in their 50s, so it will be interesting to see them 20 years older playing the same roles. While it would be very cool to see Wyld Stallyns on stage playing “God Gave Rock And Roll To You” again, it’s still very unclear if Bill & Ted 3 will actually happen. MGM owns the rights to Bill & Ted, ever since Orion Pictures folded, so remain cautious until the project it’s official.

Hopefully Bill & Ted 3 doesn’t turn into a sequel film that nobody wants and has been in development hell for years like Ghostbusters 3. At least Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter both want Bill & Ted 3 to happen, unlike with Ghostbusters 3, where it seems as if Dan Aykroyd is the only one trying to make the sequel happen. I think two Bill & Ted movies are fine, but three would be EXCELLENT!
