CollectorWith the addition of Award-winning actors Glenn Close and Benicio Del Toro, it seems like Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is getting more high profile with every bit of casting news. We know that Glenn Close will play the leader of the Nova Corps, an intergalactic police organization, but there is still a big question mark surrounding Benicio Del Toro’s role.

We know that Benicio del Toro has a multi-picture deal with Marvel Studios, so he’ll be back for more installments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe outside of Guardians of the Galaxy. According to ComicBookMovie’s “very reliable sources,” it seems like Del Toro might be playing Taneleer Tivan, also known as The Collector. There were early reports that British actor Ophelia Lovibond would be playing The Collector’s aid in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Born Taneleer Tivan, The Collector is more than a billion years old, and is one of the Elders of the Universe. He hails from the planet Cygnus X-1 and wields the Power Primordial, which has the ability to augment physical attributes, restructure molecules, create force fields, and allow teleportation. Tivan also has the ability to manipulate cosmic energy and increase in mass and size. The Collector once possessed the Infinity Gem that could control reality, but was later taken by Thanos for his Infinity Gauntlet.

Although Marvel has yet to confirm who Del Toro will be playing, we know he’ll be a large player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Either way, Guardians of the Galaxy sounds really, really strange now, full of intergalactic police squads, billion-year-old space Titans, and, of course, a talking, gun-loving raccoon and a walking tree named Groot.

Guardians of the Galaxy will hit theaters everywhere on August 1, 2014, in 3D.
