The summer movie-going season in full swing with the release of Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness, and there’s plenty more on the horizon, including After Earth, Pacific Rim, and Man of Steel. If you don’t want to wait for those films to hit theaters, you can just stay home and stream film company The Asylum’s brand of mockbuster movies like AE: Apocalypse Earth and Atlantic Rim.

AE: Apocalypse Earth follows a group of refugees from Earth who land on an exotic planet, where they must fight ruthless aliens to survive. So instead of two people on an exotic planet like in After Earth, it’s a group of people fighting for survival on an alien world. The premise for Atlantic Rim (also known as Attack from Beneath) follows an alien invasion in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, which  leads to humanity building giant robots to protect coastal cities. So pretty much Pacific Rim with the serial numbers filed off.

The Asylum has been releasing blockbuster knockoffs for years, and they show no signs of slowing down. If you’re not familiar, The Asylum is a movie studio that takes the premise of an upcoming blockbuster movie and copies it in such a way that’s completely low budget, low quality, and simply hilarious! So Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull became Allan Quatermain and the Temple of Skulls, Transformers became Transmorphers, and my personal favorite, Snakes on a Plane becomes Snakes on a Train.

The good thing about The Asylum is you can watch these movies on Netflix Streaming a few days before their big-budget counterparts. They also make good fodder for a drunken evening with friends.

AE: Apocalypse Earth will hit video stores and Netflix on May 28th, while Atlantic Rim will be released on July 9th. Check out the box art below:
