terminator-1In 2003, Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Since then, he took a job as Governor of California and has now retired from politics. Now that the “Governator” is back in front of the camera, many wondered if he will also come back to the film franchise that made him an International superstar. In the Austrian-born actor’s own words, “I’ve no idea.”

In an interview, Schwarzenegger opened up about returning to the big screen and whether or not he would be in the next Terminator film now that James Cameron will not be on board as a director or producer. Schwarzenegger stated…

I think producer Megan Ellison owns the rights to Terminator 16, or whatever it is. Yes, five. They have been trying to put a script together but I’ve not seen it, so I’ve no idea. There’s nothing on the drawing board at this point. Nothing on the plan.

It’s unclear if Schwarzenegger would return as the Terminator but if producer Megan Ellison give him a large sum of money, it’s very likely he’ll join the cast. This was the same guy who willingly played Mr. Freeze in Joel Schumacher’s God-awful Batman & Robin in 1997 so it seems like Schwarzenegger will take any role if the price is right. Schwarzenegger also commented on starring in Batman & Robin and it looks like he has absolutely no regrets about taking the role. Schwarzenegger admitted…

I felt that the character was interesting and two movies before that one Joel Schumacher was at his height. So the decision-making process was not off.

It’s still early in the game for anything to happen with Terminator 5. A few months ago, Annapurna Pictures, Megan Ellison, and her brother and producing partner David Ellison bought the rights to the Terminator franchise for $20 million from James Cameron. The Ellisons have to make a Terminator film before 2018 or the rights will revert back to James Cameron. Annapurna Pictures has had a successful 2012 with movies like Lawless, The Master, and Zero Dark Thirty so they should be prime for Terminator 5 in the near future.
