A few weeks ago we showed you the amazing short film Archetype, in which a battle robot becomes self-aware and begins to question its mandate for murder. The short directed by Aaron Sims was so good it almost demanded that someone pick it up and turn it into a movie, and now they have.

John Davis, who produced the surprise hit found footage superhero movie Chronicle has picked up the rights to Archetype with intentions to turn it into a full-length feature. Doing so will be easy, Sims has already pretty much laid out the path such a feature would take. The end of the short film contains concept art pointing to a much longer and larger story with the RL7 battle robot on the run trying to unravel the reality of its existence.

THR says Sims will also direct the full-length movie. Though he’s worked as a visual effects artist in Hollywood for years, this will be his feature directorial debut.

In case you missed it, check out the Archetype short below. My expectations are for this to be nothing less than the next District 9.
