Andrew Niccol’s The Host Takes You Behind The Scenes

Now that Twilight has run out of books to adapt into high-grossing motion pictures—not to mention the fact that we seem to have hit the saturation point with brooding vampires and antisocial werewolves—there’s a definite void in the sexy teen monster market. The Warm Bodies camp is trying to cram zombies into that niche, but they’re not the only ones trying to capture this lucrative audience. The Host is planning an alien takeover, of sorts.

They certainly have one weapon in their arsenal: Twilight author Stephanie Meyer, who wrote the book The Host is adapted from. Now you can watch a new behind-the-scenes feature where many of the people involved, including Meyer, take the time out of their busy schedules to diss Twilight. Meyer calls The Host a “much deeper” story than that of her previous books.

Directed by Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, In Time), The Host is set after a parasitic alien race has invaded the Earth. Their takeover is almost 100% complete, but there are still pockets of human resistance. Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan, Hanna), one of the so-called “wild” humans, has been usurped by one of these beings, known as Souls. But even though her body is occupied, her brain refuses to give up the fight.

There’s a complicated love triangle between three absurdly attractive young people, lots of science fiction action, and, of course, those spooky, ice-blue eyes all the possessed people have.

The Host stars Ronan, Diane Kruger, Max Irons, Jake Abel, and William Hurt, and opens nationwide on March 29th.
