Young Ones (February 12)
A post-apocalyptic drama that often looks more interesting than it is, Jake Paltrow’s dry-as-a-bone Young Ones is still a highly impressive story about greed and the struggle to survive. In a near-future where water has become one of the rarer treasures on the planet, father Ernest Holm (Michael Shannon) tries to ensure the safety of his family, including son Jerome (Kodi Smit-McPhee) and Mary (Elle Fanning). The latter is romantically entangled with a bad boy named Flem (Nicholas Hoult), whose goals cross paths with Ernest’s on several occasions. Though it rarely rises up from its dourness, the sun is always shining in Young Ones, ready to burn every bit of moisture out of your stargazing eyes.
