The 2014 Razzie Nominations Include These Notable Sci-Fi Films

We’re smack in the middle of awards season. The Golden Globes will be announced a week from yesterday, and the Academy Award nominations come down shortly after that. But for every great film currently earning props and acclaim from various guilds and critical groups, there are those that, well, lets just say they’re not very good. And there’s one annual award that celebrates the absolute worst cinema has to offer in a given year: the Golden Raspberry Awards, better known as the Razzies. A ton of sci-fi movies have won widespread critical acclaim this year, but there are also a fair number on the opposite end of the spectrum, those that have been roundly panned.

Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas and the controversial James Franco and Seth Rogen-starring The Interview topped the list, but don’t there’s also a ton of genre fare for voters to jeer. Notable inclusions are films like Transformers: Age of Extinction, Transcendence, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, all three of which were nominated for Worst Picture of the Year.

Both Age of Extinction and TMNT also landed on the Worst Remake, Rip-Off, or Sequel, while all three earned nods for Worst Screenplay. Michael Bay, Jonathan Liebesman, and first time director Wally Pfister also show up on the list for Worst Director. Morgan Freeman and T.J. Miller both earned Worst Supporting Actor nods for Transcendence and Transformers, respectively, while Megan Fox and Nicola Peltz are recognized in the Worst Supporting Actress category for TMNT and Age of Extinction.

I’m a little surprised that Mark Wahlberg didn’t get a Worst Actor nod for Transformers (I haven’t seen, so I can’t say if he’s bad or not, but that just seems like the way the nominations were going), but Johnny Depp’s wooden turn in Transcendence is the only sci-fi nod in either leading category. Rounding out the list are the Worst Screen Combos, with “any two robots, actors (or robotic actors)” from Age of Extinction and Depp and his “virtual doppelganger” from Transcendence.

So there you have it, what the Razzies think are the worst sci-fi films of 2014, though I do think the producers got the last laugh, because as critically brutalized as they were, two of these films were massive hits. Transformers even finished the year as the highest grossing release worldwide, bringing in more than a billion dollars. It may not get any big awards, but I don’t think Michael Bay is sweating a few Razzie nominations.
