Listen To The 20 Best Sci-Fi Movie Orchestral Scores Of All Time

fb share tweet share

Science fiction fires the musical imaginations of composers unlike almost any other genre. It’s no accident that so many of the greatest movie soundtracks of all time were written to express the bombastic majesty of outer space, to convey the shock and awe of creatures beyond our reckoning, to blast across the screen with cars trailing fire as they rip a hole though the fabric of time. Music has become an indelible part of almost all of the greatest science fiction movies ever made, and some of the greatest music ever to appear on film has been in science fiction movies.

But which sci-fi score is the best? The GFR team spent some time listening to our favorite composers, cast votes, and came up with this list of greats. * Listen to selections from all twenty of the best orchestral scores ever composed for science fiction films, by clicking play on each item below. Let the music speak for itself.

1. Jurassic Park | composed by John Williams

I was about to go berserk over seeing no Blade Runner in there!! But… it says orchestral. Pfieuw.

I listen to a lot of SF soundtracks and some of my fav ones are from games. Halo: ODST, Mass Effect, Myst 3: Exile, Deus Ex and others are definitely worth check out.

      “worth check out”

      err, checking…

Meh.  About half of John Barry’s score for Disney’s THE BLACK HOLE deserves mention as well.

  • Matt W

I think Akira Ifukube’s scores for the Godzilla franchise are immediately recognizable and powerful. Those harsh brass sounds and marching violins really make it, in my opinion, the best sci fi score of all time.

Vangelis’ score for bladerunner is a serious omission from the list, it was the perfect soundtrack for the film, capturing the mood divinely. I vote for that under ” Other”, thanks.

I love the score from “The Last Starfighter”, so it is getting my vote

Or the score from Toto for Dune.

  • windk

My first thought was no Blade Runner, and then noticed “orchestral” in the suggestion. Add a another list for “non-orchestral”. Also, four Star Trek installments but only one Star Wars “episode”. How about The Empire Strikes Back for the “Imperial March”? or even Phantom Menace for “Dual of the Fates”? While I’m at it, the first Terminator soundtrack, albeit non “orchestral”, sticks in my head much more than T2.

Okay I voted Sunshine… if anyone hasn’t already seen that movie I HUGELY recommend it. First of all relevant to this post the movie has a AAA sci fi soundtrack. Number two, the movie is extremely good! Kinda sad how many votes Star Wars got. I mean, it’s got great music but alot it’s themes are kind of simple and overused… other movies on that list got better soundtracks than that!

    Total Recall my favorite ever!

  • Matt

That settles it: Star Trek has generally better music than everybody else.

  • Matt

Wow. Star Trek is up here 4 times…

Great collection but it is a pity that John Barry’s Black Hole Theme is not in the list.

  • John Taylor

I used to drive a co-worker nuts by jacking up the sound when Star Wars was played on the radio. Whole list could have been John Williams.

  • PJ

I bet John Williams owns like half of this lol.

  • JakePerry166

Akira Deserves To Be In At Least # 5

  • Matteo Romano

    Starship Troopers.

And i don’t have to add anything else.
