In August, Community Health Systems was attacked, resulting in the theft of the personal information of 4.5 million patients. Luckily, no financial information was compromised in this incident. The attack was carried out with—you guessed it—malware, and investigators believe the program also originated in China. Then, right around the time of the Sony hack, a similar breach occurred at the Texas Health and Human Services Department, this one compromising the personal and medical information of 2 million more patients.

It seems just mean to hack Goodwill, but that logic apparently doesn’t seem to deter any cyber criminals. The non-profit corporation was breached from February to August, via malware on the network. 868,000 customers credit and debit card information was stolen from 330 stores nation-wide.

Katniss is ready!Celebrity Nude Photo Leak

Probably the second-most hyped hack was the leak of naked photos of celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, and Rihanna, which were stolen from iCloud accounts and, investigators think, perhaps from smartphones, and then posted on the 4chan website. The celebs banded together and threatened to sue Google for $100 million for not taking links of the photos off its search results, as well as YouTube and BlogSpot. Google complied in a hurry after that.

This list is only the tip of the iceberg. The Oregon Employment Department, Montana Health Department, P.F. Chang’s, and Domino’s all suffered hacks this year, and of course there was the Bitcoin scandal. The image below is a screenshot of a map made by Antivirus software company Kaspersky. It’s both fascinating and terrifying to watch its real-time updates of hacks around the world.
