Vintage Video Clip Introduces The Army Of “The Future”

Predicting the future is hard. For every guess that comes true, there are a dozen that seem laughable in retrospect. Hell, even the very best SF writers and futurists tends to have spotty track records when it comes to auguring the shape the future will take, so I’m certainly not suggesting that I could do any better. So we probably shouldn’t be too hard on this vintage video clip showing the “futuristic” weapons and vehicles that could make up the mysterious era known as the 1970s. We shouldn’t but we’re totally going to.

Sure, the vehicle designs look more like G.I. Joe toys than anything that actually hit the battlefield in the ensuing decades, but the concept art is actually pretty damn cool. By the time they get to the helicopter with a friggin’ howitzer cannon mounted on the side, however, this video officially becomes unintentional comedy gold. And they haven’t even gotten to the flying saucers yet.

Of course, the laughter turns to depression as the clip ends on the bold proclamation that “there will be a time when man will walk on alien soil,” and then you realize how much less interesting the future we got is than the future we thought we’d have. Sigh…

Sadly, I haven’t been able to figure out where the clip originated. I wish I had, because I would gladly watch the entire hypothetical documentary. If any of you savvy GFR readers recognize the footage, drop us a comment down below.

The narrator almost sounds like the voice of the Lost in Space robot.
