Chernobyl was a result of several terrible design decisions by the Soviet government. It was built without proper containment procedures to facilitate the extraction of weapons grade plutonium from its reactor, the emergency response teams were inadequate (but extremely heroic), and the service road was so narrow that the emergency vehicles had trouble getting there.

Chernobyl should presented as an indictment of Communism, not nuclear power.

Chernobyl happened and they couldn't fix that. The entire area will be irradiated for thousands of years. Japan is heading down a similar road, the effects of it reached American shores, even if it isn't that bad it still shouldn't happen. You say that these power plants are safe but there have been multiple major accidents. They have no off switches, if something goes seriously wrong the entire area is doomed. It may be sci-fi-ish but that doesn't mean that Nuclear power plants aren't already a relic of the past.

Nuclear power is the safest energy source known to man. Radiation is highly dangerous but the chance of a catastrophic failure that would cause a leak enough to kill someone is less likely than lightning striking in the same place three times.

Environmentalism comes down to two things, control and power.
