Life-Size Stormtrooper Cake, Clone Armies Are Delicious

There is baking, and then there is flipping artistry.  What 600 sci-fi fans had the opportunity to partake in at the Arisia Sci-Fi convention in Boston was definitely a supremely nerdly bit of confectionary artistry. Amanda Oakleaf, her husband, and a team of ten cake artists created a 6-foot, 4-inch tall, 300 pound Stormtrooper cake and donated it to the event.

As you might imagine, the life-sized Stormtrooper cake was quite an undertaking for Amanda’s team, and would’ve clocked in at an estimated $9,000 for a paying customer. Designing and building the cake took them two weeks, although they didn’t start stacking or shaping the cakes themselves until a couple of days before the event.  The legs are made of Rice Krispies and the massive weight of the cakes are held up and in place by a metal skeleton.  The amount of ingredients used in the cake is somewhat astounding: 203 eggs, 140lbs of sugar, and 55lbs of marshmallows.  It also looked ridiculously cool as it was sliced up and served:

Probably the most awesome thing about this cake, though, is that Amanda and crew strove to make the cake taste just as good as it looks.  Molding and sculpting food into something pretty is a lot easier to do when taste is not an issue (see: every television and print ad for food), but these bakers wouldn’t have been satisfied if their Stormtrooper cake wasn’t up to the same standard as all of their other cakes: “‘Each slice had three layers of cake and two layers of our italian meringue buttercream, just like our high-scale wedding cakes.'”
