Harrison Ford Will Return To Star Wars As Han Solo

fb share tweet share

A few months ago, actor Harrison Ford stated that if Star Wars: Episode VII had a good script, a good director behind the camera, and his character would receive a proper death scene, he would be “open to the idea” of returning to the Star Wars universe and reprising his role as Han Solo. Well, it looks like Solo will indeed return to the big screen in 2015.

According to Latino Review’s El Mayimbe, it’s a “done deal.” The 70-year-old actor will return to Star Wars as Han Solo. Ford’s role is expected to be much smaller than his part in the original Star Wars trilogy, but it will be good to see him back as the dashing space pirate.

The new Star Wars film isn’t the first time Ford has worked on a J.J. Abrams project. He previously appeared in the 2010 movie Morning Glory, a film Abrams produced, and 1991’s Regarding Henry, which Abrams wrote.

What does this mean for Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia? Well, if Harrison Ford will return as Han Solo, it does stand to reason that Hamill and Fisher would return as well. There’s no point in seeing Han Solo again if he’s not going to be joined by his best friend and his main love interest.

This obviously isn’t the first time Harrison Ford has reprised an iconic role. In 2008, Ford donned the fedora again to play Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. We all know how that one turned out, so let’s hope Star Wars: Episode VII is a much more satisfying return by one of Ford’s most beloved characters.

Disney Throws The Brakes On Han Solo/Boba Fett Rumors

In the wake of Disney’s announcement that there will be a series of stand-alone Star Wars movies, speculation has run rampant about who, what, when, where, and every other variable. Yesterday the predominant news was centered around a young Han Solo and Boba Fett each getting their own film. While either one or both of those would kick a lot of ass (don’t we all wonder what a young Han would be like?), we, as a fan base, may have gotten ahead of ourselves.

This sounded like a fairly solid deal, but now Deadline reports that it is anything but. Their unnamed source says, “Nobody knows when these movies are even coming out. Right now, people are just kicking around ideas. Which is why you hear it’s Yoda one day and a young Han Solo another. It’s all in early development right now.”

This doesn’t necessarily mean that baby Han and solo Fett won’t each get their own story, but it does seem that those are just two of many possibilities being considered. The whole point of the article is that nothing has been decided yet, and that nothing is set in stone.

Han Solo And Boba Fett Are Getting Stand-Alone Star Wars Movies

soloSince Disney made it official, that they would be developing stand-alone Star Wars movies, there have been some rumors about what these movies would entail. We’ve heard about Zack Snyder’s, now debunked, stand-alone film based on Akira Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai, a possible Yoda-centric film, and Robert Rodriguez’s Han Solo movie. Now it appears that Disney and Lucasfilm are in the early stages of developing a (sort of) prequel film that would follow the adventures of a young Han Solo and a stand-alone Boba Fett movie.

According to Entertainment Weekly, both projects are currently being developed and are “still very early in the process and, well, the deal could always be altered further.” There is heavy speculation that the Han Solo adventure film would take place sometime between the 20 years that separates Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Considering Harrison Ford is 70 years old, Disney would have to cast a younger actor to play Han Solo in these movies. Any suggestions?

As for the Boba Fett film, it seems like this movie could take place sometime between A New Hope and Return of the Jedi. Honestly, a Boba Fett movie where he escapes from the Sarlacc pit would be a better idea. It could also be a somewhat remake of Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours. There was no word whether or not director Joe Johnston would be involved with the Boba Fett film. Johnston was the original designer of the Boba Fett armor and he’s been very vocal about making a stand-alone Boba Fett movie.

Wachowskis’ Jupiter Ascending Adds Sean Bean As A Han Solo Type

sean-beanAfter the box office failure of Cloud Atlas, perhaps the new film from Andy and Lana Wachowski will be more appealing to general audiences. What better way to catch people’s eye than by casting an iconic screen presence from HBO’s Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings film trilogy?

According to Deadline, actor Sean Bean will join the cast of the Wachowskis’ new science fiction film Jupiter Ascending. Bean will play Stinger, a “Han Solo-type” character. Bean will be added to the all-star cast including Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, and Eddie Redmayne.

At this point, there is not a lot known about the Wachowskis’ follow up to Cloud Atlas. Some reports describe the film to be set in the future where humans are at the bottom of the evolutionary ladder, and a woman is the target for assassination by the queen of the universe. It sounds intriguing albeit somewhat vague.

Robert Rodriguez Wants To Direct A Han Solo-Centric Star Wars Movie

A few months ago when Disney acquired Lucasfilm, there was a lot of vocal excitement for more Star Wars movies. Especially since the word came that there could be standalone or spin-off movies that take place in the Star Wars universe, in addition to the core new trilogy. Now it appears director Robert Rodriguez would be open to making a Han Solo-centric Star Wars movie.

In an interview with MTV News, Rodriguez opened up to his feelings towards the new direction of the Star Wars franchise. Namely, if he had the opportunity, he would make a standalone Star Wars movie featuring the lovable scoundrel, Han Solo. “If there was something that somebody said, ‘Here, Han Solo, his own adventures.’ I’d go do that,” says Rodriguez.

The director went on to commend George Lucas for building a deep and vast universe, and cited him as a big inspiration for his own career. He also said that there wouldn’t be a Spy Kids, Machete, or El Mariachi film series if it wasn’t for George Lucas’ work with the Star Wars saga.

The announcement of new Star Wars films was exciting enough, but it went up a notch or two when original trilogy actors Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher all said they’d be game to return to the characters that helped make them household names. Star Wars fans have spent the days since speculating what adventures the older versions of Luke, Han, and Leia might get up to in the new trilogy, but so far we don’t have much concrete information. Still, if you’d like a little help envisioning what Episode VII might have to offer, check out this custom-made action figure. Behold: Old Solo.
