Dune Remake Directed By Peter Perg

There have been rumors, but now it’s confirmed. Variety says Peter Berg will direct a new movie version of Frank Herbert’s classic science fiction novel Dune. It’s already been done once as a movie, and utterly screwed up by director David Lynch. That was back in the 80s. More recently it was a long-running miniseries on the Sci Fi channel. This new version doesn’t have a script or even a writer yet, but Berg is promising an entirely different direction than the one Lynch took.

Robocop 4 Happening?

robocop031608.jpgStop in the name of the law! MGM may be planning to resurrect Robocop. Everything that was old is new again. If they can bring back Terminator then why not Detroit’s top cop?

The news comes via a press release sent around by the lion-headed studio late last week, in which they list it among a group of MGM owned franchises which they plan to make more out of in the coming year. Here’s an excerpt from the announcement:

MGM is planning an exciting fall and winter release schedule. In partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment, MGM will bring new installments of two of its tentpole franchises – the new James Bond movie QUANTUM OF SOLACE and Steve Martin in PINK PANTHER 2. MGM will also release United Artists’ international thriller VALKYRIE, starring Tom Cruise on October 3. With the appointment of Parent, MGM will enter its new phase of evolution by focusing on its major movie franchises highlighted by JAMES BOND and PINK PANTHER sequels, THE HOBBIT, THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR 2, THE OUTER LIMITS, ROBOCOP, DEATH WISH and FAME, among others.

Cloverfield DVD Cover Art

The picture to your right has been floating around the net this week. It first popped up over at CanMag, where they claim this is the box art for the upcomign DVD release of Cloverfield.

It definitely fits with the movie’s mysterious, secret government files tone. It does not however, fit in with any of the marketing used for the film, which seemed to center around using that same Statue of Liberty image over and over and over and over again until we were all sick to death of it. It’d be surprising if they left it off the movie’s DVD packaging now.

Maybe this will be the cover art for some sort of alternative DVD? That might make sense. Use the Statue of Liberty poster artwork for a bare bones edition, and save this for an SE. It doesn’t actually say Special Edition on it, but it does look like that kind of cover.

Giant Freakin Update – X-Files, Superman, BSG, WALL-E, Hulk, Speed Racer!

gfr.jpgThe past few days have been huge for science fiction news, and I’m not just talking about that played out superhero stuff that everyone spends all of their time covering. Is that even sci fi anymore? It’s almost it’s own thing. But I’m a sucker for guys in capes, so we’ll cover it… just not to the exclusion of all else.

Here’s a quick update on what’s big in science fiction this week:

– Bryan Singer confirmed that a sequel to Superman Returns is happening, and that he’s already at work on it.

– X-Files 2 finished filming this week, and the production team rumbled about their disinterested in courting existing fans, and proclaimed their love of people who don’t care about their franchise. More on how much Chris Carter hates you here.

For instance, Hellboy is a Dark Horse property which has already been turned into a franchise at Universal. Properties like Timecop and Peter David’s SpyBoy could now be on tap at U.
