trekscript New Details On The Next Star TrekIn a perfect world, I’d like to have a new Star Trek movie at least once a year. No? Every other year? No, that’s probably not happening either. The franchise reboot was grand and all the pieces seem as though they’re in place to simply start sending the new crew on all sorts of exciting adventures, but JJ Abrams and his team aren’t in any rush. They’re taking their time about it.

Star Trek: The Next screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman recently spoke with TrekMovie about where they’re at with the script and, perhaps most critically, what the hell they’re actually going to call the next movie. They can’t call it Star Trek 2, that’s already taken by Wrath of Khan. They can’t call it Star Trek 12, the franchise long ago abandoned that sequence. So what’s left? Orci seems to be leaning in the direction of naming it Star Trek followed by a colon with a subtitle. For now, we’ll have to stick with Star Trek: The Next, but here’s what they do know about where the script’s at:

  • They have a story worked out for the script, now they plan to start picking it apart to make sure it stands up under close scrutiny, if it doesn’t, it’s back the drawing board.
  • They haven’t chosen a villain for the sequel yet, but they do have a frontrunner. Please guys, promise us it won’t be Khan.
  • Frequent JJ Abrams collaborator, grade A Trekkie, and former Lost showrunner Damon Lindelof is working with them on the sequel’s story and the script.
  • They plan on “diving in” next week when Lindelof returns from vacation.
